5 Anime MMORPGs Worth Playing in 2024 (Lots of Active Players!)
Here are 5 must-play anime mmorpgs that still have an active community of players!
Prior to this year, I had never really played any anime-style games. But I got super curious after watching a few anime series, and tested out a bunch of them, specifically anime mmorpgs.
Unfortunately, there were quite a few that didn’t have many active players anymore.
So I’ve rounded up a list of my favorites that I found to have plenty of active players in 2024, and still getting regular updates by the developers.
Best Anime MMORPGs:
1
Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact has about 60 million monthly active players. The game is free-to-play but uses a gacha game system to make money.
It’s an open-world game, set in Teyvat, with an action-based battle system that uses elemental magic and character-switching.
I really love the art style of this game and thought the exploration aspects were really fun. I didn’t find the story to be super interesting, but honestly, the treasure hunting was enough to keep me engaged!
2
Final Fantasy XIV
Final Fantasy is probably one of the most well-known anime game series. It still has an active player count of over 17 million per month.
Unlike Genshin Impact, I really enjoyed the story of this game. And although the art wasn’t my favorite, it didn’t bother me enough to quit playing.
One of the coolest aspects to me was that you could own a house!
Oh, and that I could play completely alone! I don’t have many friends to play with online, so it works out perfectly for me.
It’s also now available to play on Xbox, which is great for console players!
3
Black Desert Online
Let’s get the obvious out of the way…Black Desert is a BEAUTIFUL game. The graphics alone drew me in for hours upon hours. And the characters…GORGEOUS.
The combat is also incredible, as are the random activities you can do, like fishing, cooking, hunting, etc. As a girl who loves cozy games, it was right up my alley.
My biggest issue with the game is the learning curve. I was quite confused at first, but after watching some YouTube videos, it became a bit easier to understand what I was doing.
The game has around 6 million monthly players and does cost money to play, but I would say it’s well worth it.
It was my favorite out of all the anime mmorpgs that I tried!
4
Maplestory
Maplestory is an adorable, side-scrolling, pixel-art MMORPG. It’s free to play and is one of the most popular anime MMORPGs of all time.
The old-school 2D art style was probably my favorite element of this game. It’s just cute!
I had a hard time figuring out exactly how many people currently play Maplestory, but it seemed very active! The game is still getting updates, so that’s always a good sign.
Dungeon Fighter Online is a beat ’em up style, side-scrolling anime MMORPG, and it’s free-to-play.
This isn’t a game that I would typically gravitate towards, but I did end up having a lot of fun playing it!
The combat was fast-paced and kept me on my toes. The character customization was definitely a highlight because it gave you tons of options for classes and the look of your avatar.
I think that people who enjoy retro games, would really like this one!
It does have one of the smaller active communities compared to the other games on this list, but there are still around 10k monthly players!
